A PAIR OF ELEY BROS. LTD DISPLAY CARDS,

Product Details

A PAIR OF ELEY BROS. LTD DISPLAY CARDS,
circa 1914, landscape illustrated with a scene of Georgian sportsmen armed with flintlocks advancing behind a setter and a spaniel with a farmer observing behind and signed Goodwin Kilburne, all above the legend 'ELEY CARTRIDGES, ALWAYS RELIABLE', the lower right corners marked 'Issued by Eley Bros Ltd, London, Estab'd 1828', both with grommeted holes for hanging (some mild staining and corner damage), each 14 1/2in. x 9 1/2in.

Provenance: A later paper label attached to the reverse of one of the cards appears to have been taken from a publication and reads:
Arms & Explosives Journal Oct. 1914 (page 148).
A showcard issued by Messrs Eley Bros. is a colour picture of two sportsmen of the old muzzle loading epoch advancing behind setters on to a covey of partridges concealed in some rough grass.
Both in artistic effect and truth to nature the sketch is most satisfying, besides containing that special atmosphere which makes the observer want to be doing the same thing
